My son, Lance Cpl. Stephen Sensing, will be sent to the Defense Language Institute probably next month in June to learn Arabic. DLI is located at Presidio of Monterey, Calif. He’ll not attend the full-up course but an abbreviated designed to train service members as unit-level translators (I would imagine in basic phrases and operationally necessary vocabulary). Then he’ll return to 2d AAV Battalion, Camp Lejeune, to deploy in late summer to Iraq.
Update: Steve emailed this evening to say that the course “is not definite, but very probable.”

My nephew did a full-up Russian course at DLI for the Navy. He loved Monteray, BTW. He now works for … er … he’s stationed at Ft. Mead - I can say no more.
God bless your son and please thank him for his service!

They wanted my father to take a Russian course in the 60s but he saw what was coming so he purposely failed his final language aptitude test. He wanted a trade, not a language. He currently teaches university-level electronic technology, so failing that test was a pretty good decision.

He can start with IBM
Insh’allah - if God wills (inna pig’s eye)
Bukra - tomorrow (next week, next year, whatever)
Mumkin - maybe (hold your breath, infidel dog)
Stay tuned tomorrow for our next Phrase of the Day…uh oh, USAREUR flashbacks…

I’m glad to hear of one more Arabic speaker going to Iraq on America’s behalf. I hope DLI’s Arabic school is a winner. According to some acquaintances I have in the intel community, Arabic is considered to be in the hardest of four general levels of language difficulty.
And as always, this civvie says “thank you”.

He’ll speak and write English better when he gets back. Arabic is a beautful language, stylized and flowery.

Congrats. It’s good to see they can spot the smart ones. Tell him to work hard. Monterrey won’t change, but he’ll never be able to learn languages like this again.

RE: Nice Assignment…
…that.
I had thought about going ORSA, which is/was taught there as well. However, most Orsans don’t get to jump out of airplanes in flight. [Note: Probably too fat….Humor. Ar! Ar!. Nanoo. Nanoo. Over and out….]
Regards,
Chuck(le)
P.S. Hope he gets a chance to see the area. Those intense language courses are a real bear. He’ll need a break. June should be quite nice there…..

Excellent place to study Arabic, and Monterey is not a bad place to be for 6 months.
Glad to see the Marines are trying to get more language-familiar people up front with the grunts.
Good luck and study hard!

If you make it out this way to visit while he’s at DLI, drop me a note and I’ll buy you and your son dinner. I’ll bring my older son along. We’ll give you the tour as well, if you’re interested. Regards.

Hope he get’s the assignment. Each summer I use 30 to 50 DLI and POM (Presidio of Monterey) (one “r”) as volunteers at a couple of prestigious public events occurring in the area. Would be nice to run into him. . (By the way the right side of your comments box keeps stretching off the page).

Monterey is a great place to be for a 6 months or so. Tell him to check www.rentallist.com if he needs to find a rental in the area. I have a number of friends who have been sent to Iraq. If he does come here tell him to email me and I will loan him my Aquarium passes so he can get in for free.
