I reported June 30 that one of the American soldiers slain in the shoot-down of the MH-47 helicopter in Afghanistan was the son-in-law of my town’s mayor.
Yesterday, James W. “Tre” Ponder III (I do not know his rank) was memorialized in a ceremony at Fort Campbell, Ky., where he was stationed as a member of the 160th Special Operation Aviation Regiment.
Other members of the regiment who died were also memorialized.

Master Sergeant Tre Ponder was actually a flight engineer instructor as opposed to a pilot. There’s a good article on the memorial service in this morning’s Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle (http://www.theleafchronicle.com)I served many years in the 160th with Tre, and remember him as an outstanding soldier and patriot. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Tre served as the Regiment’s Top MH-47 Flight Engineer and Flight Engineer Instructor. Tre was a Master Crewmember with the drive of the Sun, the heart of a lion, and the honest laughter of a young child. Tre loved the outdoors, but most of all he loved his family. Nothing was more special, more precious, more meaningful to him than parenting his two beutiful girls. Together with wife Lesile they made an awesome team. III you will never be forgotten, and you will always be loved. NSDQ!
