I explained here that while I really liked my new Kodak digital cameras, I could not get the included Easyshare software to install on my XP computer. I was one of many, acccording to the Kodak forums I read.
It turns out that according to Microsoft, “Windows Installer fails silently after you upgrade to Windows Installer 3.1.” There’s a technical explanation on the page, but the solution to the problem - and Kodak’s software is not the only software affected - is “to remove Windows Installer 3.1, and then revert Windows Installer to an earlier version.” The page explains how to do that.
Kodak’s image-management software is free and can be downloaded here. You don’t have to have a Kodak camera to use it.

I am intrigued with this comment. I have a Kodak digital camera and installed the EasyShare program on an XP machine almost a year ago without trouble. Howerver, when the computer crashed after a RAM module failure, I could not get this program re-installed after restoring the system and data recovery. I wonder if the person who recovered the data and fixed the computer left it with the wrong installer. I know that there is at least one other program that failed to install as well. Thanks.

Hmm. Can’t tell if that is why my HP printer fails to install.
Oh, and I’m on XP SP2: the doc says I should have msi.dll of 3.1.xxx, but I have 3.0.xxx.
Funny business: used comment area at bottom of page to say version wrong - and got certificate failure warning!

MS just released a new and improved version 3.1 installer.
It is available from their update site.
The Kodak software now installs correctly.
