Earlier this week I asked Other Hand Clapping what she wanted to do on this Mothers Day. Answer: “I want to go to the airshow at Smyrna,” a small city near Nashville. Is she a great wife or not?
Smyrna used to hold an airshow every year, but 2001’s was the last until this weekend; the terror attacks of September 2001 caused a sharp curtailment of Air Force or Navy participation in airshows, according to the Tennessean. And the private aerobatic flyers and wing walkers don’t draw a large enough crowd to return a profit.
But this year the Air Force’s Thunderbirds were back. So here are some photos of flight. Also, having attended the video-blogging session at BlogNashville yesterday, I will work tomorrow on putting online some streaming video of the aerial performances.

This Korean War vintage F-86 is also part of the Heritage Flight.
The modern-day F-15 is the third aircraft of the Heritage Flight. F-15s are flown operationally by the Air Force today.
This C-17 cargo aircraft is actually part of the Thunderbirds squadron - those little F-16s can’t carry much baggage, personnel, spare part or tools!
