Clark's endorsements . . .
With retired Gen. Wesley Clark officially a candidate for president now, it will be very interesting to see whether any of his former comrades in uniform publicly endorse his candidacy. Only retired military officers can publicly endorse a political candidate, so those on active duty who served with him will remain silent.

But there must be a pretty fair number of other retired flag-rank officers (that is, generals and admirals) who served with or under Clark, and who are under no restrictions concerning endorsing political candidates. Remember, retired four-star Adm. James Crowe campaigned on behalf of Bill Clinton.

Will retired flag rankers flock to beat Clark's campaign drum? Will there be a chorus of approving voices, or the sound of silence? Either will be highly informative.

My guess (I said, "guess") is that Clark will be endorsed by a handful of retired flags, mostly one- and two-stars, but won't enjoy numerous or highly vocal endorsements of retired flags, especially those of the upper-level.

If his own peers prove to be wary of Clark's candidacy, then his comfort level as potential commander-in-chief won't be exactly stratospheric.
